The staff member loved to cook and spend time with his family, according to a family statement obtained by CNN affiliate WSMV. He had 14 grandchildren.

“We would like to thank the Nashville community for all the continued thoughts and prayers. We are still asking for support as we grieve and try to understand why this happened.

Bethe Anastasio Lee, 21, Isaako, in the midst of a tragedy: Jesus is with you, too, but not without hope

In the midst of great tragedy, there is hope because God is a redeemer. What is meant for evil can be turned for good. May we grieve in the days ahead, but not without hope. May we also act with wisdom, discernment, and grace. And may we love, especially those who have lost,” Lee said in his video message.

“She and my sister were the closest of friends growing up and it seems like Cindy was around for all of my childhood,” he said Tuesday in a Facebook post. They lived across the street from us for a short time, but Mae Ann had a birthday one day and she didn’t. Cindy and Mae were together all the time.

The daughter of a Presbyterian church leader was 9 years old, police said, according to a statement by a sister church.

StevenCurtis Chapman is taking time to remember his friend who was killed in the Nashville school shooting.

Chapman said that Koonce’s “life marked our family so significantly,” detailing how Koonce stepped in as an educator and friend to help attend to and work with his children after his youngest daughter died in 2008 in a tragic driveway accident.

Koonce was the leader of the The Covenant School, a ministry of Covenant Presbyterian Church. Four people were killed by a shooting on Monday, including her and two other people.

The Grammy-winning musician shared that when he and his wife first heard what was happening on Monday, “we knew Katherine was there, we knew she was the head of the school, and my wife even said… ‘I know her well enough to know that she was probably doing everything she could to change this story, to stop this thing from happening, to talk to this person, whatever she could do.’”

“When we lost our younger daughter Maria in a very tragic way, our son Will in particular was carrying a very, very heavy weight,” Chapman said, going on to say how Koonce became a “mentor, friend, confidante, she was all of those things, and teacher.”

“She was, you know those people that you encounter if you’re fortunate enough… they see into your soul and they see something that most people miss and just pass by,” he added. I believe that God created her ability to see into the heart and soul of the person she was with.

“I really believe it’s not wishful thinking to say I know we’re going to see her again, we’re going to see our daughter again and that’s the hope that keeps us moving forward,” he said.
