A Brown University Student is Charged with A Class Affair for Yelled Racial Slur: Sophia Rosing, 22, Confronts the University of Kentucky

A student at the University ofKentucky is facing several assault charges after he yelled a racial slur at a group of Black students.

Sophia Rosing, a 22-year-old student who is White, has been charged with alcohol intoxication in a public place, fourth-degree assault without visible injury, second-degree disorderly conduct, and third-degree assault on a police officer or probation officer, according to Kimberly Baird, the Fayette County Commonwealth’s Attorney.

A University of Kentucky police officer went to a dorm after staff reported that an unknown lady was hitting them.

The woman told police she “has lots of money and get[s] special treatment,” the police report said. The woman kicked the arresting officer and bit their hand while being told to sit in a chair, according to the police report.

As of Monday afternoon, Rosing was being held and her bail was set at $10,000. Rosing appeared in court Monday and entered a not guilty plea, according to CNN affiliate WLEX.

One of the victims was a student employee working at the front desk at the dormitory when the incident occurred, according to a message from the University of Kentucky president. Capilouto said that the staff is reaching out to the victims.

“To be clear: we condemn this behavior and will not tolerate it under any circumstance. The safety and well-being of our community has been — and will continue to be — our top priority,” Capilouto said.

“The video images I have seen do not honor our responsibilities to each other. They show a denial of the humanity of members of our community. They do not reflect civil discourse. The university’s president said that they are antithetical to what they want to be as a community.

CNN has independently obtained the video. Woodson, the spokesperson with the university, confirmed the woman in the video is Rosing and shows Sunday’s incident.

A video depicting a student being arrested in class after a fight with a professor has prompted a review of the use of law enforcement on campus at a historically Black institution.

The student and the professor weren’t named by the university, which is an HBCU.

In the video, it is unclear what the apology was. The student’s arrest was not confirmed by CNN.

You’re the worst teacher ever, says the student. You get me taken out in handcuffs because I won’t apologize? You yelled at me because I won’t apologize. You tried to embarrass me about my paper.”

“We understand that the weaponization of police is a prevalent problem in our community; however, that is not what happened in this incident,” Robinson wrote.

“We know this situation has caused a great deal of trauma to those involved and our campus community at large, but please know that every available resource is being extended to bring a resolution,” he continued.

She said the professor was very upset and rattled by all of this. There have been several threats to her safety, which of course are cause for alarm.”

“We know you want immediate answers,” Robinson said in his letter. “However, the speed of our processes does not match the speed of social media. Ultimately, we are committed to ensuring due diligence and fairness. We do ask for your patience as we must take the necessary time to ensure the safety of everyone involved.”
