China says it has started three days of military exercises around Taiwan, in an announcement that comes after the island democracy’s president met the US House Speaker in defiance of repeated threats by Beijing.

ThePLA said that it was a warning against the provocation between the ‘Taiwan independence’ Sepoys and external forces. The exercises are necessary to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

After Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan in August, China responded by starting a series of military drills and firing missiles over it.

“In recent years, the Chinese Communist Party has continued to send aircraft and ships to harass the region, which has threatened the regional situation. Taiwan’s defense ministry said that it used President Taiwan’s visit to the US for military exercises which have damaged regional peace, stability and security.

Some of those missiles also fell into Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone near Japanese islands to the north of Taiwan, a move which heightened tensions between Beijing and Tokyo.

There were dozens of warplanes crossing into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone as well as the Chinese navy in maneuvers near Taiwan in the August exercises.

The Taiwanese government said that Beijing had sent warships and fighter jets towards Taiwan on Saturday, in response to a meeting between the U.S. congressional speaker and the island’s president.

Speaker Kevin McCarthy held talks with President Tsai Ing-wen on Thursday in California, adding to a series of foreign lawmakers who have met Tsai to show support in the face of Chinese intimidation. The travel ban and financial sanctions imposed by Beijing against American groups and individuals are retroactive to Friday.

The Ministry of Defense said that on the same day eight warships and 42 planes were seen near Taiwan, 29 of which crossed the middle line of the strait. The jets included the ones from China, namely the J-10, the J-11 and the J-16.

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s government has stepped up efforts to intimidate the island by flying fighter jets and bombers nearby and firing missiles into the sea.

The cabinet’s Taiwan affairs office will never allow for ‘Taiwan independence’ activities in any form and will take stringent measures to defeat foreign interference,” said a spokeswoman for the office.
