Moscow Police Investigate a Nov. 13 Multiple Student Stabbing in a Rental Home Near the Campus of the Boise-York College Campus
The four bodies were found by Moscow Police officers after they responded to a call about an unconscious person.
Police have called the deaths suspected homicides, which generally means the killing of one person by another, though the term doesn’t necessarily suggest death was intended or committed in a criminal manner.
They did not give any more details on the cause of death. Police said more information would be shared once family members were notified of the deaths.
The Idaho students — Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin — were stabbed to death at a rental home near campus sometime in the early morning hours of Nov. 13. After the killings, investigators couldn’t find a murder weapon or identify the suspect for weeks.
The university said counselors would be available for students at the campus counseling center, while employees could access assistance through an employee assistance program. Green urged people to reach out if they were concerned about classmates or coworkers.

The Vandals come together and support one another in difficult times. Green said to look out for one another.
Shortly after the bodies were found, the university advised students to shelter in place for about an hour until investigators determined there was no active threat to others in the region.
Three football players were killed and two people were injured after a shooting at the University of Virginia late Sunday night, university president Jim Ryan confirmed early Monday.
Police said the suspect, Chris Darnell Jones, was apprehended on Monday morning after a manhunt that lasted more than 12 hours and involved multiple law enforcement agencies, according to UVA Emergency Management.
The shooting occurred around 10:30 p.m. ET on a charter bus full of students returning from a field trip to see a play, the university president said in a press conference.
The university identified the four students killed as Ethan Chapin, 20, of Conway, Washington, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, of Rathdrum, Idaho, Xana Kernodle, 20, of Avondale, Arizona, and Madison Mogen, 21, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
The mayor said that this tragedy serves as a reminder that violence can happen anywhere and we’re not immune from it. We grieve for the people who were lost and those who left behind. Let us come together in support of each other, and be there for each other, as we mourn as a community.”
Students killed in a house near the University of Idaho campus: An Idaho State Police spokesperson confirmed that a charged man was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder
The following were canceled Monday: classes, extracurricular activities and public transportation. All public schools in the area were closed for the day.
UVA Police Chief Tim Longo said Jones will be charged with three counts of second-degree murder and three counts of using a handgun to commit a felony. The university didn’t reveal where Jones was arrested.
Jones, who is a student at the university, was listed on the university’s athletics website as a football player in 2018, but did not appear in any games.

TheMoscow Police Department, who now have the burden every day not only for them but for all of the impacted families, was thanked at the memorial on Monday evening.
Two federal law enforcement sources told CNN that a suspect was taken into custody in connection with the deaths of four University of Idaho students.
“We’re continuously making progress,” Idaho State Police spokesperson Aaron Snell told CNN. “But this is a criminal investigation, and as we make progress, we can’t always provide that information.”
Moscow, Idaho is a small farming town of about 25,000 people that is tucked in the rolling hills of the northern Idaho’s Palouse region.
Moscow Police are still searching for a knife in the case of the idaho killings, as reported by a student
Much of the information in the case will eventually be used for prosecution and cannot be put into the public eye, at risk of impeding justice at the very end, Snell said.
The Moscow Police Department only has about 30 members, which means that the early messages may have been off.
Police have several hundred leads, as well as large files of residents’ surveillance footage from the early morning hours when they think the murders happened.
Other angles are taking longer to investigate. It is believed that a fixed-blade knife was used to attack the students, and law enforcement asked local businesses to provide evidence that a fixed-blade knife was purchased. No local businesses have provided information about a knife matching the description, as of Tuesday.
We know that it is always wise for people to lock their doors and walk in pairs. There is somebody or some people out there somewhere that are murderers, and we want to find them and bring them to justice,” Snell said.
He said there could be more than one person responsible for the killings. He also reiterated that police still believe it was a targeted attack, partly because of evidence found at the scene and the fact that two people in the house survived.

Investigation of a white sedan seen in Moscow, Idaho, during the November 13 stabbings of four U.S. students are charged with four murders
The University of Idaho president said Tuesday that many students have given the school input on how they hope to proceed after the fall break, resulting in a decision to allow students to finish the rest of the semester either in-person or remotely.
In his message, Scott Green said that the faculty have been instructed to prepare in- person teaching and remote learning options for the last two weeks of the semester. Moving courses fully online is not preferred but may be necessary in limited situations.”
Public sentiment changes as people talk about the case. “They’re confused. They are upset. We want to make sure that the truth is out there, so we want to make sure that rumors are not true.
Police said that investigators have not been able to verify or identify a stalker after reviewing hundreds of pieces of information.

The dog was turned over to Animal Services and released to a responsible party after it was found at the residence of the stabbings.
Investigators in the killings of four University of Idaho students are searching for at least one person they believe was inside a white sedan seen near the crime scene around the time of the deaths last month, police said Wednesday.
The car was seen in the immediate area of where the students were stabbed to death in the early morning hours of November 13.
Information about the vehicle came from the thousands of tips police have received in the case, which has appalled the small college town of Moscow, Idaho.
The police said that they believed the person who was in the vehicle to have critical info to give regarding the case.
The Thanksgiving-Burst Attack on Goncalves, Mogen, and Kernodle students at Snell High School in Moscow
The students – Kaylee Goncalves, 21; Madison Mogen, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Kernodle’s boyfriend, Ethan Chapin, 20 – were killed just days before the school’s Thanksgiving break. They were all stabbed multiple times and were likely asleep when the attack began, a coroner has said.
Over the course of the investigation, investigators have received more than 6,000 tips. “We have quality information that we’re working on,” said Snell.
The Chief James Fry said in a video Tuesday that it was time to give those things back that really meant something to the families.
Police have created a timeline of what they were doing in the hours leading up to students’ deaths, as they work to figure out who killed them.
Two of them were at a bar in downtown Moscow while the other two were at a house, according to investigators. They all came home at 2 a.m.
Two of the victims were found by responding officers on a second floor, while two others were on the third floor. Police said there weren’t any signs of sexual assault. They did not find any evidence of forced entry or damage.
The Moscow murder weapon case study: an update of the Moscow police investigation based on the information from the global call center and a tip to the FBI
The Moscow Police Department stated in an update that calls to the FBI are being directed to the call center due to the amount of tips.
The global call center has the resources to take those calls and send them to investigators so they can use those tips in the investigation, the department said.
More than 50 investigators have not been able to locate the murder weapon that was used in the attack last month in Moscow. Still, investigators maintain they have made progress but cannot share details as that could compromise the investigation.
“I’m a dad, I understand the meaning behind some of those things,” Fry said. The items being removed are “no longer needed for the investigation,” the department said.
Autopsies showed all four were likely asleep when they were attacked. Some had defensive wounds and each was stabbed multiple times. Police said there was no sign of sexual assault.
A New Insight from a Woman Walking into an Unintentional Property: The Killing Man and His Associated Pedestrian
Police outlined a situation in October when a man appeared to be following Goncalves outside a local business, according to a news release from the department. Police said this was an isolated incident, and the man and an associate were trying to meet women at the business, which police said was corroborated through additional investigation.
“You rarely get to meet someone like Xana,” Jazzmin Kernodle said. She was loved by everyone who met her. She was so lighthearted, and always lifted up a room.”
“Our hearts go out to Kaylee, Maddie and Ethan and all their families as well,” Kernodle said. They were loved so much by everyone, and they were amazing people. My sister was very lucky that she had them.
“Ethan lit up every room he walked into and was a kind, loyal, loving son, brother, cousin, and friend,” his mother, Stacy Chapin, said in a statement.
She said that they were smart, cautious, and this all still happened. No one is in custody, that means no one is safe. We are all sad. Yes, we are all grasping. But more strong than any of these feelings is anger. We are angry. You need to be angry.
The case of Goncalves and Kernodle goes to Washington State University: a man arrested for murdering first degree in Idaho
Goncalves, 21, of Rathdrum, Idaho; Mogen, 21, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; Kernodle, 20, of Post Falls, Idaho; and Chapin, 20, of Mount Vernon, Washington, were members of the university’s Greek system and close friends. They lived in a rental home with two other people. He was visiting the house that night and was in a relationship with Kernodle.
Arrest paperwork from Monroe County Court said that a man was wanted for first degree murder in Idaho.
The law enforcement official who confirmed the arrest spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity, because they could not publicly discuss the investigation.
A Ph.D. student by the same name is listed in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Washington State University, which is a short drive across the state line from the University of Idaho. Messages requesting more information were left by officials at the school.
The case broke open because law enforcement asked the public to help find a white sedan seen near the home around the time of the killings. The FBI’s special call center had to be opened because the Moscow Police Department had made the request.
The rental home was going to be cleared of potential biohazards and other harmful substances to collect evidence on Friday. The news release said the house would be returned to the property manager upon completion, which was unclear.
