BioS Update Overview of the Asus 13th and 14th Generation Graphics Processing Processors: The Impact of New CPU Updates and Memory Degradation
Intel reportedly said these BIOS updates shouldn’t cause any performance loss, and reviewers are already gearing up to test Intel’s latest microcode to ensure there are no big changes for its 13th and 14th Gen chips.
If it works well, this could be a very big deal for Intel, which lost some of its reputation after its flagship chips were found to crash earlier this year and, after a long investigation, discovered there would be no true fix, requiring customers to replace any damaged chips. Intel recently announced layoffs and stopped non-essential work, and they also aren’t having a great year.
If you have an Asus board and want to check that your BIOS is set to the right power profile, Falcon Northwest has a good overview we’ve embedded below. The most recent updates should be used for Intel settings instead of the company’s own.
We’re also still waiting on Intel to provide a tool to test existing machines for any processor degradation. The warranty for a variety of 13th and 14th Gen CPUs has also been extended by two years. PC makers are largely passing on that warranty extension to consumers, and you can find out if your own system is covered right here.
Intel is currently distributing to its OEM/ODM partners a new microcode patch (0x129) for its Intel Core 13th/14th Gen desktop processors which will address incorrect voltage requests to the processor that are causing elevated operating voltage.
Intel is continuing to investigate mitigations for scenarios that can result in Vmin shift on potentially impacted Intel Core 13th and 14th Gen desktop processors. Updating will be provided by Intel by the end of August.
The internal testing indicates the performance impact is within the run-to-run variation. The performance for gaming has been within run-to-run variation. Cyberpunk 2077, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Total War: Warhammer III – Mirrors of Madness) with one exception showing slightly more impact (Hitman 3: Dartmoor). System performance depends on a variety of factors.
